  • Robot Car Kills First Human!

I suppose that it was only a matter of time. The first case of a robotic car killing a human happened this week in my neighborhood in Arizona. I run on that very street and have crossed at that very spot many times. This is the first of what is likely to be many deaths in this industry. 13 Americans lost their lives during the spaceflight training or testing process before we achieved the programs goal of landing on the Moon. While the value of a moon landing can be debated, the value of the goal of the self-driving car industry is universally accepted. According to the Association for Safe International Road Travel (ASIRT.org) there are 1.3 million worldwide deaths every year in car crashes. In addition there are 20 to 50 million individuals who are either injured or disabled in those and other crashes. If nothing is done, traffic injuries are predicted to become the 5th leading cause of death by 2030. Uber and others must redouble their efforts to make their cars safer and forge ahead. More:ASIRT

Waymo's Self-Driving Car Program In Arizona

Three years ago I made a bet with a friend. The loser of the bet had to buy the winner a self-driving car. If a self-driving car was avaliable for sale in less than 15 years she had to buy me one. If it took more than 15 years for them to come to market, I had to buy her one. I need to have a garage sale soon I can make some room to park it. I am getting very close to victory. Sign Up:Waymo

"Spot Mini" the Doggy Robot by Boston Dynamics

For me the most exciting robot work is coming from Boston Dynamics. They make quite a variety of robots when it comes to mobility. The four legged, the bipedal Atlas, and two wheels as legs. The Atlas is incredible for being able to do flips. Another amazing thing is their stability on uneven terriain. If they do fall they just get up and keep on going. Watching their videos will defenitely inspire you to want to make your own. More:Boston Dynamics

    Audio DeepFakes Are Here

Fakenewsers are lining up to get thier hands on this potentially transformational technology. Everyone needs to know that this technology is out there because if you don't you are likely to believe your eyes...and you shouldn't. The Obama deepfake tech creates and graphs his own mouth onto his face in the video. The audio is his own words from a different video. No harm, no foul, right? A team of researchers at University of Washington trained a neural network to watch thousands of videos of Obama and translate different audio sounds into basic mouth shapes. Video DeepFakes Are Here Too

The first time I remember seeing this was in the movies. It was a prequel scene in a Captain America movie. It was suppose to show the captain before the science experiment that turned him into a buff superhero. They put Christopher Evans's face on the body of a skinny actor for certain scenes. But that was a team of artists working in a big budget Hollywood studio. The Obama deepfake was a team of computer science researchers at a major university. This next round of fakes are being done by your neighbor in his basement with free software and an app on a couple of hours. This Trump deepfake puts his whole face onto Alec Baldwin's head. This one retains the Baldwin audio so the deepfaker had to make Trump's mouth match the words Baldwin says in the SNL skit. Deepfake porn videos exploded in just one month after the open source technology was made avaliable online. More:Some Food For Thought

Food That Comes To Your Door

Honestly, at this point I don't mind driving to the store to get my food. After spending hours coding stuff, I need to get out. However, there is no reason why this wouldn't be used by UPS or the Post office or even to bring food for the elderly or mobily challenged. At first I would definitely order something just to watch it drive to my house. It's not too hard to image fleets of these bringing all of us every possible thing we could ever want or need.

AI Doctor Is More Likely To Discover Heart Disease

When I see stories like this I start to wonder which technology will come first. The ability to detect all of our ailments or customizing our DNA so we won't get those diseases in the first place.

    SpaceX Dual Rocket Booster Landing

For my money this was one of the coolest looking and inspiring things I have seen in a while. I got choked up and a little teary with the awesome display of what is possible with human and American ingenuity. If Musk can get rockets to come back to Earth and land in this manner, my car should be taking me to work fairly soon. More:SpaceX

    China's Rural Drones

Why are they doing this already and not us? Two main reasons: 1) parts of their country are very underdeveloped and hard to get to, so there is a real need. 2) They seem to have less buracratic red tape. Vested interests benefit from making it happen. Just think, who would and would not benefit from drone delivery here in the US and you have answered your own question.

    Magnetic Levitation of Spherical Tires

Hey George Jetson! When are we getting our flying cars? Goodyear's spherical tires may qualify. See, it's not just because the tires are completely round, which is cool, they are undergirded with magnets of an opposite polarity to those placed in the wheel wells. Technically this car doesn't not touch the ground and flies through the air.
